In 1888, The Kabbalistic Order of the Rose Cross was founded in France, by Sar Josephin Peladan and Stanislas de Guaita. Other members included Papus, and the Abbot Alta. In 1891, Peladan, a devout Catholic, broke away from the Order, unaccepting of the Eastern teachings and operative magic embraced by the Kabbalistic Order.

He founded The Ordre de la Rose-Croix du Temple et du Graal, and in 1892, he organized the first of six “Salons de la Rose+Croix.” These were in direct opposition to the state sponsored salons who favored realist art, with no attention to any of a spiritual or philosophical nature. Peladan put his artists on notice that there would be “absolutely no landscapes accepted.” The materialist air of the art featured in the museums and state-sponsored Salons would be overshadowed by the idealist and symbolic displays at the Salons de la Rose+Croix.

Artist Alexandre Seon and composer Erik Satie were among the members of the Order to contribute to the Salons. Some selected original art and music will be presented on this site; however, in this modern age, there is a vast amount of information, images, music, and videos available to all online. In the interest of time and space, and with respect to the original works of the historians, I will include direct links to the sites in which much of the content originates, rather than simply copy, paste, and reference it here.

I first learned of the Salons and the wonderful art, and the music of Eril Satie, exactly one year before this 125th Anniversary. I hope you enjoy this tribute as much as I enjoyed creating it.
